The Director of “White Nights”: The Basis of Any Film Is Imagination

According to the Public relations office of the 34th FIFF, on Thursday 21st of April, Farzad Motamen talked about his experiences in cinema with the students of Darolfonoun.

He said: considering the fact that I work on scripts which are written by others, I can claim that I am more of a director; therefore, today we can discuss who exactly is a director and what he does.

He continued, “The basis of a work any director does is imagination and that is the starting point for any film. Yet, imagination is limitless and has no borders. We have to take it under control and make it a productive force so that it can be practically helpful in the process of movie-making”.

Motamen added that “thinking of the theme of the movie can help in choosing its rhythm. I do not believe in fast and slow rhythm; the rhythm is either right or wrong, and it is the director’s responsibility to decide which rhythm suits his film”.

The director of “Music Box” stated that “you have to start thinking about the roles from the very beginning when you are reading the script. When I was working on the movie “Seven Curtains” I said to all the actors that all of you are masks with no expression on your faces. I am going to give you the same advice. Do the same thing with images. Do you want your actors to use their hands a lot like Italian actors? What kind of intonation do you like them to have? Do you want them to talk fast or slow? It all depends on the way you the director see the characters”.

Motamen also expresses his opinion about the nature of directors and said that he believes a director is a very lonely and sad person whose work is rarely appreciated, although what he does is one of the most pleasurable works in the world”.

Thinking of an image to define directing a movie, Motamen concluded that “I do not see the director as a commander. Even though I believe he has to have discipline, but he still needs to give his group the freedom in order for them to be able to be creative. Because after all we are average directors and are in need of help from others. We are not Godard who had his own unique life. That kind of a person has no other choice than being a commander and has only a few number of people around himself that he can trust”.
