Iranian director Kamal Tabrizi says concept is a decisive factor when choosing a film for award nomination, because it is simply an idea of what the movie will be about.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of this year’s run, and on the methods used to select this year’s movies and nominees, he said, “We had a selection committee and we consulted top directors and critics. They have watched all festival films and we have scored them accordingly. We have also detailed our own views before sending our final decisions to the director of festival Reza Mirkarimi.”
He added, “A film has to be entertaining. Entertaining is a general definition. Sometimes the rhythm of a film is too slow, but it is still entertaining for the audience. For instance, a movie with slow rhythm has a better effect on me than a film with fast rhythm. We should consider all tastes and forms before nominating a film for an award.”
According to him, the juries score a film also based on their takes on its overall structure, theme, concept, and audience impact.
In conclusion he said, “After all this, we decide where the nominated movie has to be screened next. This year we have the Korean Cinema, Festival of Festivals, Short Films, etc. I believe a good film should have all these minimum elements and requirements to get nominated in any category.”
